Tolpel is a Survivor. A survivor of canine cancer.
This is the beginning of sneak peeks for the book I am writing/photographing:
“Survivors Book – Your Best Friend’s Journey with Cancer”.
Five inspirational stories of dogs with cancer and how they overcame the disease with Medicine, Love and Support.
This book will be released in Sept 2010 and 100% of the proceeds goes to the CSU Animal Center and Bow Wow Buddies Foundation.
Tolpel has B-cell Lymphoma. It is a blood disease that starts in the lympathic system and will eventually spread systemically. Tolpel was treated at CSU and he traveled up to Ft. Collins for his chemotherapy treatment. On my “Getting to Know You” Form, I asked Jessie (Tolpel’s mom) the question:
(please note – this is in the voice of Tolpel)
1. What are some words or phrases to describe you?
” I am a very dignified dog. I don’t beg for attention and I am affectionate on my own terms. But I am fiercely loyal and deeply bonded to my family. I am very communicative and I am smart, too.(If my brother has the rawhide that I want, I will ask my mom for another one, than carry it over to my brother, drop it in front of him, and make a show of playing with it until he drops the bone I really want. Then I snatch up the coveted, spit-softened bone and leave him to start on the hard new rawhide.) I can tell you exactly what I want by looking hard at you, then at the object, then back at you. I know a lot of people words. My parents have to spell around the house so I don’t get too excited if I hear a familiar phrase. I have the most limpid and luminous eyes; even strangers comment on them.
Dignified, Handsome, Intelligent, Reserved, Tall, Yellow, Trustworthy, Sweet-faced, Thoughtful”
Tolpel has been through a lot in his life with his previous owner having passed away and then Jessie adopting him from his temporary foster family. Jessie told me of multiple medical issues and his cancer. Of course, you would never know it. He plays ball, fetches and gives kisses just like any other healthy dog in the park. The difference is – is that He is a Survivor.

Thank you Tolpel + Jessie for a wonderful “walk in the park”!
